You have the best chance to encounter one in the strait between Tortuga and Santiago. You can find a Ship of the Line in some English transport convoys that sail between English governor’s towns (Port Royale, Charles Towne) and the northern edge of the map. These ships are however quite rare so until you have encountered one, the Galleon will suffice. With 50 cannons and a crew of 200 it blows those little Spanish Galleons out of the water. In the third and fourth scenario, a majestic new ship called ‘Ship of the Line’ becomes available. It may be less maneuverable than the smaller boats, but maneuverability is useless if you don’t have speed and firepower. It has the most cannons, the biggest crew and the highest speed.

The Galleon is simply your best ship during the first two scenarios. Although that sounds very nice and balanced, it’s a total load of crap. Whichever approach you prefer, you should always start with getting a big boat as fast as possible! In another walkthrough I read that there isn’t one ship that is ‘the best’, because every ship has its advantages and disadvantages.

Therefore I will sometimes make a distinction in strategy for those who want to beat the game as fast as possible (F) and those who prefer the more extensive approach (E). It all depends on the amount of work you are prepared to put into this. Personally I like to build a large fleet, become rich as f*ck, and help my nation become prosperous while opposing the growth of the other nations at the same time. However, there can be a bit more to this game. This may seem pretty obvious, since the game target of each scenario is to annex a certain amount of towns. Always go with extra aiming accuracy here, since your reputation growth is never an issue and the extra accuracy might just make the difference in those difficult battles. New scenarios become available after you complete the previous one and additional nations become available after you complete a certain scenario with different nations.Īfter you have chosen a name and sailing logo, you get to choose a bonus feature that will help you throughout the game. When you first play the game, you can only choose the first scenario and you can only play with two nations. However, the difficulty level does not affect your sea battles or the missions that are assigned to you, those are only affected by your rank and reputation. Holland on the other hand only has a few towns in the north, which could become problematic if your relationship with the other nations gets worse. For example: in 1570 Spain has many towns all over the map which makes it easy to play as Spain, since the relationship with your own nation will generally be excellent.

Note that the difficulty level of each scenario is based on the amount of towns that you need to annex and the amount of towns that a certain nation has. You can choose from four available scenarios (1570, 1600, 16) and four different nations (Spain, England, France and Holland).

For basic information I suggest you read the walkthrough that was written by CHU Vegetta or the official game manual ( ). This guide only addresses strategy, hints and tricks to rule the seas like a madafaka. Since the game was first released in 2003 I’m not sure if anyone is going to read this guide or whether the game is still being played at all, but I was kinda bored and I felt like a lot of information in the official game manual is incomplete or even incorrect.
